World's first high-value waste plastics project begins trial run in Jieyang, Guangdong

On July 11th, Guangdong Dongyue Chemical Technology in Jieyang, Guangdong province, successfully launched trial operations of the world's first industrial-scale equipment for the advanced pyrolysis of 200,000 tons of mixed plastic waste per year. This pioneering project enables high-value recycling of waste plastics, featuring a globally original technology and world-leading process design. It offers a promising solution to the long-standing challenge of plastic pollution.

The project introduces a groundbreaking "one-step" chemical recycling process that eliminates the need for complex sorting of mixed scrap plastics, such as agricultural film and packaging bags. Instead, it directly converts various types of low-value waste plastics into high-value-added chemical raw materials like low-carbon olefins and mixed aromatics. This unified approach not only transforms diverse waste streams into premium outputs but also increases product yield rates by at least 40% compared to traditional methods, opening vast market potential.

Over its full life cycle, the project is expected to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions compared to conventional waste incineration and the use of virgin fossil-based feedstock for chemical production. It thus provides strong support for China's "dual carbon" strategy to peak emissions and achieve carbon neutrality.

"The success of this project is a vivid demonstration of applying Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization," said Wang Shaole, deputy Party secretary of Jieyang City. "It also reflects our concrete efforts to implement the provincial government's 'Hundred, Thousand, and Ten Thousand Project', and to accelerate the construction of a strong province driven by technological innovation." He added that the future large-scale application of this project could help reduce China's reliance on imported crude oil, contributing Guangdong's wisdom and China's solutions to the development of a green and circular economy.

全球首个废塑料高值化利用产业项目在揭阳试产成功

7月11日,广东揭阳东粤化学全球首套20万吨/年混合废塑料深度裂解工业化装置正式宣告试生产成功。该项目可实现废塑料高价值回收利用,技术上属国际首创,工艺水平世界领先,为彻底解决废塑料污染难题提供了可能。

该项目首创“一步法”废塑料化学回收工艺,无需对农膜、包装袋等混合废塑料进行复杂分选,直接就能将混合废塑料转化为低碳烯烃、混合芳烃等高附加值化工原料,不仅能将不同材质的低值废塑料统一制备为高值化工原料,且产品收率较传统工艺提高至少40%,使之具备广阔的市场前景。

在项目全生命周期内,相比传统的垃圾焚烧处理方式以及原生化石能源生产化工原料的过程,该项目能够大幅减少二氧化碳排放,为国家“双碳”战略目标提供有力支撑。

“该项目的成功,是我们贯彻习近平生态文明思想的生动实践,也是落实省委实施‘百千万工程’、加快建设科技创新强省要求的具体实践。”揭阳市委副书记王绍乐表示,后续该项目的大力推广应用,还将有望缓解我国原油的对外依存度,为绿色循环经济发展贡献广东智慧、中国方案。
